Featured Project:
A Madness of Angels ‘Book Trailer’ – Orbit Books

Espace were asked to produce a ‘book trailer’ for the first in a new series of modern fantasy books from author Kate Griffin. As the books take place in present day London, the brief was to create footage that would look like it had been captured by security cameras, showing supernatural activities from the book.

We travelled to London and met with the marketing executive to brainstorm ideas, as a result of that meeting we formed a clear idea of what we wanted to shoot. A small part of the budget was allocated to shoot a proof of concept video, where we very quickly mocked up a shot and used editing software to create the special effects. This video was then passed back to the publishers for approval from higher up, and the go ahead was given for the shoot.

To save on costs and ensure enough budget was allocated to the editing and special effects we shot the footage locally to us in Bristol. The resulting video files were then ‘dirtied’ to create the CCTV effect, static and noise was added. The animation of the angel on the wall was hand drawn by Bristol based film-maker Michael Smith.

As we produced a series different scenes which were then edited together to create the final trailer, we ended up with several short clips which could act as standalone videos, and Orbit posted these in the run up to the release of the book.

At the time of posting the video on their YouTube channel Orbit’s best performing video had racked up just over 2,000 views in a year and a half. The Madness of Angels video we produced had almost 9,000 views in 48 hours and helped generate a buzz for the launch of the new book, all at a very reasonable cost.
